Despite Windhorst’s close proximity to the US Embassy, this small, classic Berlin cocktail bar is not over-run by diplomats. Au contraire – Windhorst attracts a crowd of friendly regulars more than happy to engage in conversation. The fact that owner Günter Windhorst also works behind the bar makes service even more personal. Having trained as a barman in Kreuzberg institution Würge-engel, he embarked on his own enterprise five years ago. Located almost in the centre of town, it’s an ideal stop for theatre-goers and visitors to Berlin’s opera house. Paintings of jazz greats provide the only decoration in an otherwise plain interior – a hint at the owner’s preferred music choice (also reflected in his venerable collection of Jazz and Latin vinyl). A great atmosphere in great company – whether you arrive with someone or not.
