Wintergarten im Literaturhaus
Those in search of a quiet retreat from the marauding shoppers of Ku’damn should head for the conservatory café of West Berlin’s Literaturhaus. Built in 1886, the wrought iron building was initially intended for domestic use but a hundred years later became a home for writers and literary conversationalists. Elderly couples and stylish women sit down to enjoy their afternoon coffee and cake with a silver service. But unlike many of the traditional coffee houses in Berlin, the Wintergarten has a distinctly modern feel. During summer, guests kick back with a traditional Berlin white beer and a slice of raspberry tart on one of the large garden benches, while during the winter months, they gaze at the frosty lawns from the warmth and comfort of indoors. An impressive selection of international newspapers is available and a bookshop can be found downstairs.
