XVA Gallery Café
In the past few years, the art market in the Middle East has begun to boom. Most of the big-name galleries are located in the Al Quoz area, which can be difficult to find and even harder to navigate, filled as it is with unremarkable, unmarked warehouses. In sharp contrast, Bastakiya, which is now a wipe-clean rendition of what it once was, (namely the hub of a city that, a century ago, was just a small trading port), you’ll find the XVA gallery. One of the gems in this almost eerily empty area, it’s a leading light in the burgeoning art scene and also boasts one of the prettiest courtyard cafes in Dubai. The vegetarian fare is cheap as chips but much, much healthier and with an onsite mini-branch of glam fashion boutique S*uce, it’s a whole lazy Saturday in one manageable dose.
