Yugong Yishan

A night listening to live music at Yugong Yishan is de rigueur for trendy expats and Chinese hipsters. Located in a courtyard amidst the beautiful 19th Century European architecture of Chinese warlord Duan Qirui’s HQ, the venue has readymade ambience. Inside, the plush cream-colored sofas in the upstairs lounge are filled with 21st Century courtiers and, perhaps, the occasional latterday warlord. The club has one of the best sound systems in the city and considering the high ceilings the acoustics are better than most. Yugong Yishan prides itself on bringing in the best international underground acts, such as UK reggae great Pete Holdsworth, French band Air, and Japanese hip hopper DJ Krush. One of the bigger venues, it has a 1,000 person capacity for Beijingers to rock out to local bands and acts like DJ Qbert, who created the art of ‘turntabilism’ in the ’80s. They also host occasional photography and contemporary art exhibitions by up-and-coming local artists as well as independent Chinese cinema screenings.
