Situated just behind Old Town Square, rubbing suggestively against the hem of Josefov, the Zapa Bar wins no awards for titular originality but does gain credit for being one of the longer-standing institutions for drinking in Prague – and for doing precisely what it says on the tin.
Descend a spiral staircase into a warm and intimate basement, where you are presented with a long wooden bar, behind which efficient young men shake and stir as if their lives depend on it for a clientele that mixes loyal locals with visitors. As well as housing one of the best whisky collections in Prague, Zapa Bar certainly doesn’t shirk on the cocktail list – and it also has a humidor.
The atmosphere is more gentlemen’s club than Czech pub, and on the right night can be just as much fun as any other place in the area. If you don’t know what to choose, ask for the Rum & Ginger cocktail – it’s the house speciality.
