Zinc
Zinc opened in 1997 in an old 1920s villa at the top of end of Monnot Street, and has been packing in a clientele who never seem to tire of going out in Beirut. Feeling like a pasha’s bedroom, the T-shaped space has a velvet-sofa lounge area facing large bay windows that lead out into a private canopied garden.
Incredibly trendy, Zinc attracts an older, Francophone crowd (though not exclusively so). It’s known for its atmosphere – low lights reflect off the deep red-ochre walls covered with modern art and photographs, while a DJ spins a mix of popular favourites from the ’60s to today. Be sure to notice the original Lebanese tiled floor and mosaic underside to the bar – both intriguing features.
The beautiful crowd seem to canter their way through numerous bottles of champagne and sip the wonderful cocktails (prepared with serious vigour), only occasionally pausing to graze the fusion cuisine on offer. Smoky and crowded, Zinc remains a staple on the Lebanese scene. Dress to impress.
