Hg2 : The Hedonist

Zum Guten Glück

With a popular retro-chic
café and vintage-furnished rooms, Zürich’s most bijou guest-house has been a favourite
of architects, designers and the fashion crowd since it opened in 2008.
Noticing Zürich’s preponderance of corporate luxe and the lack of reasonably
priced rooms, owner Oliver Baumgartner set up Zum Guten Glück and sister
property Kafischnaps to fill the void and great successes they are.

Set above a
chic 1950s diner-style café (formerly a brothel), which draws in a steady
stream of cool locals for breakfast waffles and evening drinks, Zum Guten
Glück’s 10 rooms are simple white spaces, punctuated with original vintage
pieces from the 1920s-1960s. The singles are very small, but doubles are
decently sized, and the largest, room 9, has great charm. Kafischnaps (www.kafischnaps.ch) has just 5 rooms, each a riot of colour themed
around fruit liqueurs.

Be warned, in both properties the bathrooms and shower
rooms are communal (although immaculate) and the general feel is pretty no
frills (no TVs for example). Located in an up and coming area, which still has
its fair share of ‘massage parlours’, Zum Guten Glück gives you swift access to
Kreis 4’s vibrant bar, restaurant and club scene with more traditional Zürich
just a swift tram ride away.
